Matt became interested in coffee through café work when he started jumping behind coffee machines in his early 20’s. His interest exploded when he started cupping (tasting coffee) a lot of coffee while working as head barista for Blue Bottle Coffee farmers market division in San Francisco. Matt travelled through Colombia for two months on his way back to NZ, visiting coffee farmers and coffee operations. He started working for Firsthand 4 years ago and took over roasting operations. Matt is passionate about getting well processed fresh crops of exciting single origin coffees to roast. These produce unique and delicious flavour profiles and tell the story of their farm and place.
