Barry has spent the last five vintages as winemaker at Clearview Estate Winery. He has also worked for Ngatarawa Wines, Church Road Winery and as a flying winemaker in the Loire and Bordeaux.
A native of Hamilton Barry first came to Hawke’s Bay not only to start his career in winemaking but also to find more sunshine. His first formal introduction to wine came in 1997 while studying for the Certificate in Grapegrowing and Winemaking at EIT. After becoming hooked Barry continued his studies at EIT and completed a Bachelor of Wine Science. Barry’s winemaking philosophy is one that requires attention to detail whilst ensuring site specific characteristics are expressed.
Barry starting as a wine show steward in 2008, since then Barry has gone on to be an associate judge at the Royal Easter Wine Awards, Spiegelau International, Bragato and National Wine Show of Australia Canberra. He has also been a senior judge at the Hawke’s Bay A&P wine awards.
After nearly thirteen years, Barry has come to regard Hawke’s Bay as home and lives in Napier with his wife Amelia (also an accomplished winemaker) and their two children Jacob and Florence.
