Duncan is a third generation Central Hawke’s Bay farmer and business owner.  His great great grandfather (James Smith) founded James Smith department store an iconic Wellington institution opened in 1866 which operated for 126 years. Duncan farms 620 hectares (1,600 acres) either side of the Tuki Tuki river, with 105 hectares (260 acres) of irrigation, growing food crops and a grass-based finishing system.

Duncan and his wife Annabel brought their local butchery, the Waipawa Butchery on 1st July 2017 stocking all the beef and lamb products directly from their properties at Patangata.  The beef and lamb are breed, gender and weight specific, Duncan has chosen these characteristics for the consistency of quality and quantity they produce. All beef is 21 day dry aged on the bone. The lamb is also hung for 4 days before sale.  So then supply chain is short, the quality outstanding, the providence guaranties consistency.
