Martin Poppelwell is based on Mataruahau, Bluff Hill, Napier. Working from home across a number of established studios enabling work to be made across a range of mediums, such as painting, printmaking, pottery, textiles and public commissions.
He lives with his wife, a black cat and a large rambling garden. It has been this garden over the years that has generated much of the background to his works, in particular a very old grove of fruit trees. They have ended up being used as diagrams or maps upon which to hang, float and sustain his work, and more recently large grid pieces, painted poetry and pottery.
Martin Poppelwell was born in Hawkes Bay in 1969. He studied at Otago University, Dunedin and Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland finishing in 1991. Six years later he undertook a Diploma of Ceramic Design and Production at Whanganui Polytechnic.
